When to visit Villa Pehuenia and Moquehue? It depends on what you want to do

If you’re planning a trip to Villa Pehuenia and Moquehue, the first question is usually “when should we go?” — and the short answer is: it depends on what you want to do. The region has two clearly different seasons, and each one opens up different activities.

Winter: snow on Batea Mahuida

The Batea Mahuida snow park usually opens in early July, once there’s enough snow for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snowshoe hikes. It’s a small, family-friendly mountain with drag lifts, so it works well both for first-timers and for more experienced skiers.

The snow window is fairly short — it starts closing toward the end of August. If snow is your plan, it’s worth moving fast — check our package and activity catalog for this season’s actual dates.

Spring and summer: water, trekking, and forest

From October to April, the region changes completely: sailing on Lake Aluminé opens up, the trails to the mountain domes clear of snow, and the sandy beaches start filling in. If your thing is hiking, paddling, or just being near the water, this is the window.

A concrete data point for anyone who wants to swim: the warmest water months are January and February, averaging around 19°C (66°F) — similar to the Atlantic coast in season — with air temperatures reaching up to 35°C (95°F). The rest of spring/summer the water is cooler, but still great for sailing, kayaking, and boat trips.

Sport fishing season, with mandatory catch-and-release, runs from November to May.

A detail few people know: the piñón harvest

Between late February and April 24th, the harvest of the piñón — the seed of the araucaria tree — opens up, a fruit central to the local Mapuche culture. If your trip falls in that window, it’s worth asking about this local tradition before planning your itinerary.

In short
